security career sickness
Do you ever suffer from client-induced nausea? You know, the feeling you get after the CISO jollily asks “How are we doing at security” soon after you’ve discovered they do next to NOTHING.
If you’re like me and if you get too many of these in short order you get sick. Sick like “I don’t care anymore, f*** this”. My nausea peaked recently and I wondered if complete cynicism is the unfortunate end.
I then re-read a snippet of an email I received:
“But they _did_ hire you, so there must be a spark of initiative there.”
Yes. I was delighted to ponder this thought for a minute. Complete cynicism be damned!
How is it then you, I, anyone in security can keep healthy amidst what reality is like today? For me the answer is I like and have fun doing security. So to all my future gigs that make me sick, I don’t care, that is, I don’t care how bad or stupid it all is, security is a trip I like to be on.
